Snow Avalanche: Study and Detection using Remote Sensing Techniques

چکیده
Snow avalanche is one of the most life-claiming calamities in the world. In avalancheprone regions, it is necessary to alert the population about such events beforehand to abate the effects. Hence it is important to build a snow avalanche detection system which will also detect landslides. To understand how an avalanche is started, snow physics needs to be understood which describes us about types of snow avalanche. If the snow is loose then possibility of snow-slide is more which depends on some of the parameters such as depth and character of old and new snow, moisture content, precipitation intensity and some environmental factors such as wind action and temperature, as described in this paper. It also lists some of the state-of-the-art instruments used in avalanche detection and some employing acoustic nature of avalanche. Wireless sensor nodes can be used as they are low power devices and can be adapted to suit the intended application. Finally, we brief about implementation using ZigBee and tabulate some of the popular wireless sensor nodes and their features which can be used for the same. Keywords— snow avalanche, infrasound monitor, snow crystals, remote sensing, wireless sensor nodes, ZigBee

Remote Sensing Tools for Snow and Avalanche Research
Since the first images acquired from airplanes (1915) and satellites (1960), remote sensing has had a great impact in diverse number of fields such as meteorology, military, topographic mapping, archaeology and forestry. Today remote sensing has even become a common tool for the general public, with location searches using high spatial resolution (< 1m) imagery on GoogleEarth or Bing Maps. The ...
متن کاملRemote Sensing Based Retrieval of Snow Cover Properties Case Study (Shirkooh Mountain Yazd, Iran)
Snow cover area is one of the most important criteria to calculate snow melt runoff. This can have an effect on the biology of the plant and the environment of a region. Using the catchment basin physical characteristic to calculate snow cover area is a conventional method, though its accuracy is not good enough. Most of the useful methods in calculating snow cover area are based on satellite i...

متن کاملCould retrieval of snow layer formation by optical satellite remote sensing help avalanche forecasting ? Presentation of first results
Of special interest within the field of avalanche research and avalanche warning are properties related to snow grain type and snow grain size at the surface. In continental and intermountain avalanche climates weak layers or interfaces are the main cause of avalanches. Knowledge about such weak layers helps to increase the precision of avalanche forecasting. Some of these potential weak layers...
متن کاملStudy of the snowmelt effects on surface and ground water in the Bahar basin using remote sensing data
According to recent Studies, about 60 percent of surface waters and 57 Percent ground waters are located in snowy zones in Iran. In most areas of northern hemisphere and alpine environment areas, snow melt lead to the maximum instantaneous flow rate and is an important part of annual discharge. The present study investigated the effect of snowmelt on the surface waters and ground waters in B...
